Tribute: Carrying the Spark Forward

Nirmal “Nims” Purja (25 July 1983 – 30 July 2026)

Genuinely heartbroken by the tragic news coming off Broad Peak following Thursday’s avalanche. Finding out about Nims’ passing is a heavy, surreal blow. My deepest condolences go out to his family, his close team, and the loved ones of all ten climbers who lost their lives on the mountain on that dark day in the Himalayas.

To say Nims became a staple in my daily life would be an understatement. I must have watched 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible at least 26 times by now. If there was a documentary, a podcast, an interview, or a panel featuring him, I saw it. Much to the mild torment—and ongoing anxiety of my immediate family, his relentless energy turned a casual interest into a full-blown obsession with high-altitude trekking.

He had this rare, electric ability to make the impossible look doable through sheer willpower, humility, and joy. Watching him conquer the world’s most dangerous peaks didn’t just entertain me—it fundamentally shifted how I looked at my own life.

He was the reason I originally bought my hiking boots and got out onto the trails. What started as simple local walks turned into longer weekend treks, hill climbs, and a complete transformation of my physical and mental discipline.

Now, that inspiration has a definitive target:

Next year, I am walking to the base of Everest.

Everest always felt like a distant, legendary world meant for someone else, but Nims helped demolish the mindset that had me trapped in an endless cycle of ‘I could never do that’. He proved that massive, daunting goals are just a series of deliberate, relentless steps forward. I may not be a mountaineer, but I’m ready for this journey six months ahead of schedule.

“When you think you are done, you’re only at 45%.” — Nimsdai Purja

The mountains give us incredible vision, but they can also demand the ultimate price. As I continue training and eventually set foot on the trail to Base Camp next year, I’ll be carrying his spirit, his mindset, and his legacy with me every step of the way.

Rest easy, Nims. Thank you for shifting my horizon and giving me a fire that changed my life. I hope the fat man has shown you all, that even in middle age, it’s never too late.

Rest easy Nims
